Teeth Whitening and Cosmetic Dentistry

Many people are dissatisfied with the colour of their teeth and want white teeth. Over the years teeth can be become stained from factors like drinking tea, coffee and red wine. Smoking is another common cause of staining.

It is possible to whiten your teeth to obtain a more pleasing and confident smile but this is a procedure that should only be carried out by, or on the prescription of, a qualified dentist.

Only natural teeth can be whitened; the whitening process does not affect crowns, bridges or fillings which will remain the same colourand may require replacement to colour match

At Alington Dental we offer home whitening as we feel this is the best and most gentle way to whiten your teeth and give a long lasting result. Furthermore you can be re-assured that that your teeth whitening treatment is being carried out by a professional.

How does teeth whitening work?

We take impressions of your teeth then make thin flexible clear trays which fit over your teeth. The whitening gel is placed in the trays and the trays are worn for 1 hour a day (some systems use a gel that is used for a longer period of time but this does not increase the whitening properties of the gel).

How long does teeth whitening last?

This will depend on your exposure to factors that cause staining. Normally your whitening will last at least two years. After this cycle of whitening you would need to consult with your dentist to see if a “top-up” was required or advisable.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Generally speaking it is not a painful process but some people may experience mild tingling whilst using the gel and a little more sensitivity during the treatment. If this happens we can advise on steps to take.
